He was captain of the Australian cricket team during what is known as the ‘golden era’ (2004-2011). He has also been named as the ‘Cricketer of the Decade’ for 2000 – 2010. Many consider Ponting to be one of the best batsmen of the modern era.

Ricky Ponting is known as the only Australian Test leader to have taken his side to 3 different defeats at the Ashes, but he had made up for that by leading the team to many other victories, including the 2nd Ashes win for Australia. He is the leading run-scorer in Australia for ODI and Test cricket. His is one of the few players in cricket history to have achieved 13,000 Test runs. He is the only cricket player in history to have been involved with 100 Test wins.

In 2012 he announced his retirement from playing Test cricket but had since gone on to captain and play like a franchise player in international teams. In 2019 he became the assistant coach of the Australian men’s cricket team.

He has faced some criticisms for lack of imagination as a cricket captain, but those he has led have always said he was a good leader.  Ponting is looked up to by many as an Australian sports leader who has led several generations of cricketers to victories around the world. He has also been involved in many books about cricket.
